A two-way switch has one common terminal (L) and two outputs (L1, L2): it sends the live to one of the two travelers. An intermediate switch sits between two-way switches and either passes the two travelers straight through or swaps them. The lamp only lights when the live reaches the last switch and the loop back to neutral is closed.
